The door knocking campaign and the card you signed ~ may have look like the cards posted at bottom
During the union door knocking campaign which began in 2005 and 2006 and resurfaced in 2011, child care providers have reported to their local child care associations and state child care association, how union organizers have come to their home/place of business during the busiest part of their operating hours to solict their support. Unfortunately, many providers report experiencing union organizers who did not indicate that they were there on the behalf of a union or the true nature of the card they asked the provider to sign. Many providers have shared that when they were approached in the door knocking campaign, the organizers asked providers what their concerns are about their child care profession or what they would like to see changed or how it could be improved. And then, asked the provider to sign a card to:
a. receive more information
b. sign the card as a petition to support other providers
c. as a way to get information about health care for providers
Providers also report that the organizer did not tell them that when they filled out the card and signed their name, they had granted the union "exclusive representation for the purposes of collective bargaining on your behalf ." Once the authorization cards are certified, the "yes vote" cannot be retracted. Examples of the cards are shown at the bottom of this page. Prior to April 6, 2012 that card counted toward the "votes" the union collected to pursue an Executive Order from the Governor. On April 6, 2012 a Ramsey County District Court Judge ruled that Governor Dayton did not have the authority to issue the Executive Order he wrote on November 15, 2011. At this point, the authorization cards appear to only be effective as a membership and due collection authorization.
Providers who signed the SEIU-Kids First authorization card voted "yes" for a union. Upon an Executive Order or legislation and a negotiated contract, SEIU-Kids First providers will have the opportunity to re-sign/join as a dues paying union member.
Providers who signed the Child Care Providers Together-AFSCME authorization card did both. Upon an Executive Order or legislation and a negotiated contract, CCPT-AFSCME providers' authorization cards are also their enrollment as a dues paying union member.
If you feel you were adequately informed about this issue and you want to be a member of the union, your respective union organizations are available to assist you.
If it was not your intent to "vote" to support the union and you do not wish to be a member, you can request your card back. Your request must be in writing to the the appropriate union address based on your county of residence.
